Well that was exciting! I leave my family behind and continue on to the
first significant hill which leads out of Ashland and into Framingham.
Legs and knees still showing no signs of pain...yay...
Before I realized it, I jogged past Alex, Lisa and Steve DiOrio! They were in a crowd and unexpected but it was good to see them. Wish I had known they would be there so I could stop and talk briefly. Oh well...onto Framingham.
At this point, the running crowd has thinned a bit and I jog past a very tall, brightly dressed, very thin older man power walking. It turns out that his walking is a bit faster than my walking and a bit slower than my jogging. Every time I walked, he passed me and every time I jogged, I passed him. It was things like this that kept my mind off of the fact that there was still 22 miles ahead of me.
Then I was over the five mile mark and my stop watch had 55 minutes. Still putting away extra minutes for later in the race. More mental math... I need to be at the next mile marker by 1 hour and six minutes and I have about 10 minutes in my 'bank'.
Into Framingham and still feeling pretty good. Past the six mile marker...another 11 minute mile. Past the Framingham train station and still keeping pace back and forth with the power walker.
Over the 10K mark and again, I realize that anyone at work will be seeing that I am still going. Technology is amazing! I make my way to the seven mile marker and I start again with the mental math but was interupted when I realize that it's the DiOrio family again! This time, I had enough warning and was able to go over and talk briefly. I don't recall exactly what I said but I believe it was something along the lines of, "Up to $6000!!!!". That was a good boost to see them. It put a smile on my face and kept my mind off of the mileage behind and the mileage ahead. It was also one of the longest stretches on the route where I wasn't expecting to see anyone. My next stop will be out of Framingham at the Natick Commons....mile 10.
