Back to marathon martin - Marathon training tips

Week 4- Wednesday - February 15, 2006

I was told that it wasn't as important to stick to the day to day schedule as it is to maintain the weeks overall mileage. That if I feel good one day, to go ahead and do extra mile or if I don't feel good, cut back on the mileage. With that said, 50 degrees outside and the frigid weather coming back on Saturday, I opted to switch my medium run day (today) with my big run day (saturday). So today I had to run 10 miles.

I was prepared mentally and felt pretty good as I headed out. I was also told that when I get into the double digits, I should probably take breaks along the way, the way I will in the marathon. These breaks should be good for the muscles to recoop a bit.

The 2.5 mile mark was at the top of a big hill so it was a good place for my first small walk. At 4.5 miles, my phone rang.....a good place for another small walk. I then made it up a half mile hill....that was a tough one. I took another small walk at the 6.5 mile mark, at the bottom of the next steep hill. At 7.5 my legs were getting pretty sore and I took another slightly longer walk and at 9.5, I couldn't go anymore. I ended up walking most of the last 1/2 mile, although I did jog a bit to finish it out. That one hurt....but it's done.

Ten miles done!
